Why use alternative power?
There is no doubt that an independent power system is not for everyone. If you use large amounts of electricity and are happy to keep paying for it for the rest of your life, then you are almost certainly better off "getting the electricity connected" and dealing with the disadvantages.
If, on the other hand, you are prepared to consider the often simple and painless ways to minimise your electricity consumption - or you don't use large amounts in the first place - and like the idea of being free from a lifetime of bills and blackouts, then alternative energy is probably the best choice.
If you are facing high costs to have electricity connected then a stand alone system is probably a wise investment. Some of the advantages are listed below.
Freedom
Once you have bought your system it's all yours. You will never have to worry about electricity price rises, blackouts, brownouts or high "end of line" maintenance costs.
Minimal environmental impact
- Local - Some of the nicest places to live are relatively remote. Independent systems do not require tree clearing and allow you to site your house on the best spot on the property, rather than close to where the power comes in.
- Global - Independent systems reduce or eliminate your use of fossil fuels for electricity and significantly lower your contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.
Reliability
A professionally designed and installed independent power system is generally far more reliable than the rural electricity grid. This reliability gap is likely to increase as Victoria's privatised electricity companies continue to run our transmission and distribution systems down.
Lower initial cost
Power is a costly service to provide and grid extensions - "getting the power on" - can be prohibitively expensive, even where the distance is quite small. The further from the electricity grid you are, the more likely you are to save money by having an independent system installed.
Minimal ongoing costs
Running costs on an independent system can be as little as a few litres of distilled water a year. That's less than one copy of your favourite magazine. Regular generator use adds to running costs, but can also allow you to start small and build up over time.
